To verify a U.S. university properly, international students must separate institutional accreditation, programme accreditation, SEVP certification, campus identity, STEM classification, practical-training claims and the Form I-20. A familiar university name or high ranking does not prove every one of these.
This guide gives a repeatable process using the U.S. Department of Education’s DAPIP, the Study in the States school search, College Scorecard, official university programme pages, recognised programme accreditors and the I-20 itself.
Verification rule: never accept “accredited,” “SEVP-approved,” “STEM” or “top-ranked” as a complete answer. Record the exact accreditor, campus, programme, CIP code and official source.

Step 1: Verify Institutional Accreditation in DAPIP
Use the U.S. Department of Education’s Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs as an official starting point.

- Exact legal institution name.
- Location and campus information.
- Accrediting agency.
- Current status and any relevant dates.
- Programme accreditation where listed.

Institutional versus specialised accreditation
Institutional accreditation covers the institution. Some professional fields also rely on specialised accreditation for licensing, professional recognition or further study. Check the exact programme, campus and intake with the relevant recognised accreditor.
Step 2: Verify SEVP Certification Separately
A school needs Student and Exchange Visitor Program certification to enrol eligible F or M international students and issue the relevant Form I-20. Use the Study in the States school search.
Match all of these
- Exact school name.
- Campus or instructional site.
- City and state.
- School type.
- Programme location shown on the offer and I-20.

Step 3: Match the Exact Campus
Large university systems may have main campuses, branch campuses, extension centres, partner sites and online programmes. The university brand can be real while the exact delivery location differs from what the student expected.
- Copy the campus name from the offer.
- Find the school or campus in the SEVP search.
- Confirm the programme is delivered there on the university’s official site.
- Check the local tuition, housing and practical-training context.
- Match the same campus on Form I-20.
Step 4: Use College Scorecard for Context
College Scorecard can provide official institutional and field-of-study information such as cost, completion, debt and earnings where data are available. Use it to test marketing claims and compare alternatives.
Do not use College Scorecard as proof of SEVP certification, visa eligibility, STEM status or OPT authorization.
Step 5: Verify the Exact Programme

Two programmes with similar names can have different curricula, CIP codes, costs and STEM classifications. Do not rely on the title alone.
Step 6: Verify a STEM Claim
- Ask the university for the exact CIP code assigned to the programme.
- Confirm that the programme officially uses that code.
- Check whether the code is on the current DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List.
- Confirm the code later on the I-20.
- Remember that individual STEM OPT requirements still apply after graduation.
Common mistake: words such as data, analytics, information, engineering or technology in a programme title do not automatically prove STEM OPT eligibility.
Step 7: Verify Internship, Co-op and CPT Claims
Ask the programme and international office
- Is the practical experience required, optional or competitive?
- Is it part of the established curriculum?
- When can an F-1 student become eligible?
- Who authorizes CPT and when?
- Is the work part time or full time?
- How many international students actually secure placements?
- Could the programme create 12 months or more of full-time CPT?
Twelve months or more of full-time CPT generally removes post-completion OPT eligibility at that education level. A marketed internship should be analysed as curriculum and authorization, not only as a salary opportunity.
Step 8: Audit Form I-20
If the I-20 estimate differs from the university website, ask which student type, period, housing and insurance assumptions were used. Calculate the complete programme separately with the USA cost guide.

Partner, Extension and Online Programme Risks
- Confirm who teaches the programme and who awards the degree.
- Check whether the exact location is SEVP-certified.
- Verify whether the delivery mode supports the intended F-1 study route.
- Confirm which campus, faculty and career resources the student can actually access.
- Do not assume the main university’s rank or facilities describe a partner site.
Professional Recognition for Indian Students
U.S. institutional or programme accreditation does not automatically settle professional recognition in India. Students planning medicine, nursing, law, architecture, psychology, engineering or another regulated profession should check both the U.S. programme body and the relevant Indian regulator before enrolling.
Verification Red Flags
- The institution or expected accreditation cannot be found in official records.
- The offer names a different campus from the one researched.
- The school appears in SEVP search but the degree-awarding or accreditation status is unclear.
- The only accreditation evidence is a marketing logo.
- The programme claims STEM status but will not confirm the CIP code.
- An agent promises OPT, H-1B or permanent residence.
- The internship is described as guaranteed but no curriculum or CPT process is explained.
- The I-20 cost is far higher than the budget shown by the agent.
- Payment is requested to an unrelated personal or third-party account.
- The deposit or visa-refusal refund policy is unavailable.
