Scholarships for Indian Students in Australia 2027: RTP, Australia Awards and University Funding

HomeScholarships & CostsScholarships for Indian Students in Australia 2027

Updated July 2026Named funding opportunitiesConfirmed, current and pending status separated

Scholarships for Indian students in Australia are mostly offered by universities, faculties and research projects—not through one national application. The strongest strategy is to combine realistic university discounts, competitive awards and affordable no-scholarship options instead of building the entire plan around one result.

Important correction for Indian applicants: India is not listed on DFAT’s current 2027 Australia Awards Scholarships participating-country page. Do not budget for an Australia Awards long-term scholarship unless DFAT later adds an eligible India route. Australia Awards Fellowships or other Australia–India programmes are different products and should not be presented as ordinary degree scholarships.

Start with the Study in Australia for Indian Students 2027 guide and calculate the remaining expense using the Australia cost guide.

Named Australian Scholarships Indian Students Should Check

Status warning: university schemes can change by intake, course, campus and nationality. Values below describe the currently published or recently published scheme known in July 2026. The award must be re-verified on the official university page for the exact 2027 intake before it is included in a budget.

Named opportunity Current published value or structure Best suited to 2027 action
Sydney International Student Award 20% contribution toward tuition for eligible students from selected countries, including India, in eligible undergraduate or postgraduate coursework Strong students who also have the capacity to fund the remaining tuition and Sydney living costs Confirm India, course and commencement eligibility on the University of Sydney page
UNSW International Scientia Coursework Scholarship Published scheme has offered full tuition or an annual tuition contribution, depending on award category High-achieving coursework applicants with strong leadership and extracurricular evidence Check the 2027 term, application deadline, essay requirements and exact benefit
Monash International Merit Scholarship Published scheme has offered AUD 15,000 per year, up to the stated maximum over the course High-achieving international undergraduate applicants in eligible programmes Verify whether the scholarship continues unchanged for 2027 and whether a separate application is required
Deakin Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholarship Published scheme has offered 50% or 100% tuition reduction Applicants with excellent academic performance and evidence of leadership or community contribution Confirm minimum academic threshold, personal statement, references and 2027 closing arrangements
Griffith Remarkable Scholarship Published scheme has offered 50% of tuition for eligible undergraduate and postgraduate coursework High-achieving international applicants who meet the exact course and intake rules Check the 2027 application round and continuation GPA requirement
University graduate research scholarships Common structures include a tuition-fee offset, living stipend and limited allowances Research master’s and PhD applicants with supervisor, project and research-method fit Check each university’s research scholarship round, international quota and admission sequence

Use these as a starting shortlist, not a guaranteed list. Universities can exclude medicine, dentistry, online courses, packaged pathways, sponsored students or certain campuses.

Research Training Program: The Main Government Research Route

The Australian Government funds eligible higher-education providers through the Research Training Program. Universities—not the Department of Education—select students and administer applications. RTP can support overseas students undertaking research master’s or doctoral degrees.

RTP component What it can cover What the applicant must confirm
Fees Offset Tuition-fee support for the research degree Whether international tuition is fully offset and for how long
Stipend General living costs The university’s offered rate, duration, indexation and tax treatment
Allowances Ancillary costs connected with the higher degree by research Relocation, thesis, health cover or other eligible items under the university rules

For 2026, the Australian Government publishes a full-time RTP base stipend rate of AUD 34,315 and a maximum rate of AUD 53,608. The 2027 base and maximum rates are scheduled to be announced by 1 October 2026. A university does not have to award the maximum rate, and receiving admission does not mean receiving RTP funding.

Research scholarship application sequence

  1. Identify a research problem and universities with matching supervisors or projects.
  2. Read whether supervisor contact is required before the formal application.
  3. Prepare a research proposal or project-fit statement, CV, transcripts and research evidence.
  4. Check whether admission and scholarship use one application or separate forms.
  5. Submit before the research scholarship deadline, which may be earlier than the course deadline.
  6. Track tuition offset, stipend, OSHC, relocation and start-date conditions separately.

Coursework Scholarships: What Indian Students Usually Find

Automatic assessment

  • Considered with admission
  • No separate scholarship form
  • Often a partial tuition discount
  • Still check exclusions and continuation rules

Separate competitive application

  • Extra form or essay
  • May require leadership evidence
  • Earlier deadline
  • Limited awards

Faculty or course award

  • Restricted discipline
  • May be tied to one campus
  • Smaller applicant pool
  • Can close without a general university deadline

Do not reject a university simply because its headline scholarship percentage is smaller. A 20% discount at a lower-fee university can leave a smaller final bill than a 50% discount attached to a much higher tuition figure.

What the Scholarship Actually Does to Your Budget

Example Original tuition Scholarship Remaining tuition What is still unpaid
20% tuition contribution AUD 52,000/year AUD 10,400/year AUD 41,600/year Living costs, visa, OSHC, flights and setup
AUD 15,000 annual award AUD 48,000/year AUD 15,000/year AUD 33,000/year All living and compliance costs
50% tuition scholarship AUD 44,000/year AUD 22,000/year AUD 22,000/year Living costs can still exceed the remaining tuition
Full tuition award AUD 50,000/year AUD 50,000/year AUD 0 tuition Potentially AUD 27,000–49,000 yearly living costs plus visa and travel
RTP-style tuition offset plus stipend Research fee varies Fee support plus university-set stipend Depends on exact offer Any gap between stipend and real living costs, plus uncovered OSHC or relocation

A scholarship result should change the remaining cost, not hide it. Recalculate the full degree using the Australia worked-budget guide.

What Scholarship Committees Usually Evaluate

Evidence area Weak presentation Stronger presentation
Academic achievement “I have good marks.” Class rank, GPA or percentage, difficult subjects, academic progression and relevant awards
Course fit Generic praise for Australia Specific subjects, research groups, accreditation or career capability connected to the programme
Leadership Holding a title without outcomes Problem, action, number of people affected and measurable result
Community contribution One-day participation certificate Sustained responsibility, beneficiary impact and evidence
Research potential Broad interest in a popular topic Clear problem, methods exposure, project fit, publications or substantial dissertation work
Career plan “I want a good job abroad.” Role, sector, skill gap, Indian or global problem and how the degree enables the next step

Do you need a very high CGPA?

There is no universal scholarship CGPA. Some awards publish an academic threshold; others rank eligible applicants competitively. Meeting the minimum only makes you eligible—it does not predict selection. Course difficulty, institution context, research output, leadership and available award numbers can also matter.

Is IELTS 6.5 enough for a scholarship?

An English score normally establishes course eligibility, not scholarship strength. A higher score may help only when the scholarship explicitly assesses it or when it improves admission competitiveness. Do not retake a valid test only because an agent claims every scholarship requires a higher score.

Scholarship Document Pack

Document How to improve it
Academic transcripts Include complete, legible records and grading-scale information where requested
CV or academic resume Use evidence, dates and measurable outcomes; separate research, work, projects and leadership
Scholarship statement Answer the award’s criteria directly rather than reusing a general SOP
References Select people who can provide specific evidence and brief them before the deadline
Research proposal Show the problem, gap, method, feasibility and supervisor or project fit
Offer or application ID Confirm whether admission must be submitted or awarded before scholarship consideration
Evidence of achievements Keep certificates, links, publications, project files and employer verification organised

Build a Clean Evidence Record

Scholarship applications repeatedly ask for education, projects, research, work and measurable outcomes. Maintain one accurate master profile and adapt it to each selection criterion.

A Three-Basket Scholarship Strategy

  1. Full-funding reach options: RTP, graduate research packages and rare full-tuition awards. Apply where your profile genuinely fits, but assume competition is intense.
  2. Meaningful partial awards: 20–50% tuition reductions or substantial fixed-value scholarships. Compare the remaining amount, not the advertised percentage.
  3. Affordable fallback offers: universities and cities you can fund without winning a competitive award. These protect your intake from one scholarship decision.

Recommended application tracker columns

Field What to record
Scholarship name Exact official title
Status Confirmed 2027, current scheme, pending or unavailable
Value Percentage, annual amount, full tuition, stipend and allowances
Duration First semester, first year or full normal course duration
Application route Automatic, separate form, nomination or research application

Continuation Required GPA, study load, conduct or enrolment conditions
Remaining cost Tuition gap plus living costs and compliance expenses

Scholarship Failure Cases

  • An agent presents Australia Awards as available to Indian degree applicants despite India not appearing on the current participating-country list.
  • A 2026 award is described as “confirmed for 2027” before the university publishes the new round.
  • The student sees “50% scholarship” but does not check that the course or campus is excluded.
  • A tuition discount is applied only to the first year, while the budget assumes it continues throughout the degree.
  • The deposit deadline arrives before the scholarship decision, and the student has not read the refund terms.
  • The applicant uses a general SOP instead of answering scholarship selection criteria.
  • A research applicant submits admission but misses the separate university scholarship deadline.
  • The family subtracts an unconfirmed award from visa and loan planning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Indian students apply for Australia Awards Scholarships in 2027?

India is not listed on DFAT’s current 2027 participating-country page for Australia Awards Scholarships. Indian students should not plan on this route unless DFAT officially changes the list.

Can international students receive RTP scholarships?

Yes. RTP supports domestic and overseas students in eligible research master’s and doctoral programmes, but universities run their own selection processes.

What is the 2026 RTP stipend rate?

The Australian Government publishes a 2026 full-time base rate of AUD 34,315 and maximum rate of AUD 53,608. The university decides the actual offered rate, and 2027 rates are announced separately.

Are 20% and 50% scholarships enough to make Australia affordable?

Not automatically. Calculate the remaining tuition, living costs, visa, OSHC, travel and currency buffer before deciding.

Do I need an offer before applying for a scholarship?

It depends. Some awards assess applicants automatically with admission, some require an application ID or offer, and others have a separate form and deadline.

Does a scholarship improve student visa approval?

A confirmed award can strengthen the funding evidence, but it does not replace the Genuine Student, health, character, English and other visa requirements.
