Home›Study Abroad›Study in USA for Indian Students 2027
To study in the USA in 2027, Indian students must coordinate university admission, accreditation and SEVP verification, Form I-20 funding, the F-1 visa process and the rules for maintaining student status. These are separate systems. Admission does not guarantee an I-20, an I-20 does not guarantee a visa, and a visa does not guarantee employment or long-term immigration status.
This guide follows the practical sequence: choose a credible programme, verify the institution and campus, calculate the complete cost, secure funding, receive and check the I-20, pay the SEVIS fee, complete the F-1 process, enter correctly and use CPT or OPT only under the applicable authorization rules.
Core USA rule: the degree should remain academically and financially worthwhile even if a scholarship is smaller than expected, campus work is unavailable, OPT employment is delayed or immigration rules change.

Who Should Consider the USA in 2027?
Strong fit
- You need specialist programme choice, research or facilities.
- You can compare programmes by curriculum and outcomes, not brand alone.
- You have a complete funding plan and downside scenario.
- You understand that employment and immigration outcomes are not guaranteed.
Proceed cautiously
- Your plan requires a very large education loan.
- You are relying on an unconfirmed assistantship.
- The programme’s STEM or internship claim is unclear.
- Your course choice is difficult to connect to previous education or work.
Reconsider
- The school or campus cannot be verified in official systems.
- The family only has first-semester funds.
- The plan depends on guaranteed OPT, H-1B or permanent residence.
- The application requires inaccurate financial or academic evidence.

Four Checks Before Applying or Paying
| Check | What it proves | Official starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Institutional accreditation | The institution is accredited by a recognised accrediting agency | U.S. Department of Education DAPIP |
| Programme accreditation | The exact course meets professional or field-specific standards where applicable | Relevant recognised programme accreditor |
| SEVP certification | The exact school or campus can enrol eligible F/M students and issue Form I-20 | Study in the States school search |
| Programme value | The curriculum, cost and outcomes fit your academic and career goal | Official programme page, catalogue and College Scorecard where relevant |
Accreditation and SEVP certification answer different questions. A school can be allowed to enrol F-1 students without being the strongest academic or financial choice. A recognised institution may also have a programme that lacks specialised accreditation needed for a profession.
Run the complete process in How to Verify a US University before paying a deposit.
Course Progression and Programme Choice
A credible choice connects the programme to the applicant’s education, projects, research or employment. The explanation should be specific enough to show why this course, level and university make sense.
| Profile | Potentially logical route | Question to answer |
|---|---|---|
| BTech in Computer Science with software experience | MS in computer science, cybersecurity, data science or software engineering | Which advanced skills and modules are missing from the current profile? |
| BCom with accounting or finance work | MS Finance, accounting, business analytics or a relevant MBA | Why is this level and specialisation appropriate now? |
| Mechanical engineer moving into management | Engineering management, operations or project management | How does the management training remain connected to technical experience? |
| Master’s graduate applying for another master’s | A specialised degree with limited overlap | Why is a second degree necessary rather than work or a higher research route? |
| Applicant with a long gap | Any coherent programme supported by recent preparation | What happened during the gap and how is current readiness documented? |
Weak explanation
“The USA offers world-class education, high salaries and excellent opportunities, so I selected this university.”
Stronger evidence structure
→ specific knowledge or skills gap
→ exact curriculum, faculty, research or practical component
→ reason for university and location
→ realistic funding plan
→ credible career use of the qualification
→ understanding of temporary F-1 status
Do not copy a generic SOP or interview answer. Every point should match your real documents and programme.
Form I-20: The Bridge from Admission to F-1 Processing
The U.S. Department of State explains that the first step is admission to a SEVP-approved school. The school creates the student’s SEVIS record and issues Form I-20. The I-20 is not a visa; it is the certificate of eligibility used in the student-status process.
Check every important I-20 field
- Name, date of birth and citizenship match the passport.
- School, campus and programme are correct.
- Education level and major are accurate.
- Programme start and end dates are understood.
- Estimated tuition, living and other costs match the university information.
- Personal, family, loan, scholarship and school funding are recorded accurately.
- The SEVIS ID is used consistently for payment and visa processing.
If the I-20 estimate differs from the website or offer, ask the university to explain the period and assumptions in writing. Use the USA cost guide to calculate the entire programme, not only the I-20 period.
Funding Evidence for Indian Applicants
The school may require financial documents before issuing the I-20, while the consular officer may ask how educational, living and travel costs will be paid. The evidence should show both availability and a credible source.
Funding evidence should answer five questions
- What is the official first-year amount?
- What is the complete programme cost?
- How much is immediately available?
- Where did the money come from?
- How will later semesters and loan repayment be managed?
Parent-sponsored scenario
| Evidence component | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Bank statements and fixed deposits accepted by the university | Shows liquid funds |
| Income-tax returns, salary or business evidence | Supports the sponsor’s capacity and source of money |
| Relationship and sponsorship declaration | Connects the sponsor to the student |
| Recent large-deposit explanation | Documents sale, maturity, bonus or other lawful source |
| Household obligations and later-year plan | Shows that the funding is sustainable |
Education-loan scenario
A loan file should distinguish preliminary eligibility from a formal sanction. Understand the sanctioned amount, margin money, collateral, co-borrower, disbursement conditions, interest during study, moratorium and later-semester release.
Scholarship or assistantship scenario
Count only written funding that states the amount, duration and conditions. “Funding may be available” or a professor’s encouraging email is not the same as a formal appointment. Compare funding routes through the USA scholarships and assistantships guide.
Never create artificial financial evidence. Temporary borrowed balances, altered statements or false sponsor records can create serious admission, visa and future immigration consequences.
Current Core Government Fees
| Fee | Current amount | When paid |
|---|---|---|
| I-901 SEVIS fee | US$350 | After receiving the initial I-20 and before the visa interview |
| F-1 visa application fee | US$185 | Under the Embassy or Consulate application process |
Recheck both amounts immediately before payment. Application tests, university fees, document services and travel costs are separate.
F-1 Visa Process in the Correct Order
- Apply to and gain admission from a SEVP-certified school.
- Complete the school’s financial and I-20 process.
- Review and sign Form I-20.
- Pay the I-901 SEVIS fee using the correct SEVIS ID.
- Complete Form DS-160 accurately.
- Pay the visa application fee and follow the U.S. Embassy or Consulate appointment instructions.
- Prepare identity, academic, financial and programme evidence.
- Attend the interview when required.
- Wait for visa issuance before buying non-refundable travel.
- Enter no more than 30 days before the programme start date.
New F and M visas can currently be issued up to 365 days before the course start date, but this does not allow entry more than 30 days early.
What the Visa Interview Tests
The Department of State states that additional evidence may be requested about academic preparation, intent to depart after study and how educational, living and travel costs will be paid.
Be ready to explain
- Why this exact programme and level fit your background.
- Why this university is a better match than your alternatives.
- Which modules, research or facilities matter.
- Who is paying and what the full cost is.
- How later years will be funded.
- What career use the degree has outside guaranteed U.S. employment.
- What you will do if campus work, CPT or OPT employment is unavailable.

Visa Refusal and Reapplication
A refusal does not automatically mean the university or applicant is permanently ineligible. The correct response depends on the legal basis and facts.
| Issue | Weak response | Stronger response |
|---|---|---|
| Course purpose unclear | Memorise a longer generic answer | Reassess programme fit and build evidence-based answers |
| Funding not credible | Move money temporarily | Document source, sponsor capacity and later-year plan |
| Information inconsistent | Submit the same application without correction | Identify the inconsistency and correct all related records truthfully |
| Circumstances unchanged | Reapply immediately because a new appointment is available | Reapply only when additional evidence or a meaningful change exists |
The Department of State notes that a person refused under section 214(b) may reapply when additional evidence or changed circumstances exist. Misrepresentation or fraud can have much more serious consequences.
Entering the United States and Maintaining Status
A visa allows travel to a port of entry; Customs and Border Protection decides admission. Carry your passport, F-1 visa and Form I-20 in hand luggage. After entry, review the I-94 record and complete the school’s international-student check-in.
Maintain status by
- Reporting to the school and enrolling as required.
- Maintaining a full course of study unless an authorised exception applies.
- Keeping passport, I-20 and contact information current.
- Obtaining authorization before employment.
- Consulting the Designated School Official before programme, campus or status changes.
Employment While Studying
On-campus employment
Eligible F-1 students may generally work on campus subject to status rules, commonly up to 20 hours per week while school is in session and potentially full time during official breaks.
Off-campus employment
Do not begin off-campus work merely because an employer offers it. Off-campus employment requires a lawful category and the required authorization.
Budget rule: campus work should be treated as possible support for personal expenses, not the reason a high-cost degree becomes affordable.
Curricular Practical Training
CPT is practical training that is integral to the curriculum, such as an eligible internship, cooperative education or required practical experience.
- The work must relate to the programme and curriculum.
- The school’s Designated School Official authorizes CPT.
- The authorization must be completed before employment begins.
- The approved employer, dates and work basis should match the updated I-20.
A student who accumulates 12 months or more of full-time CPT generally loses eligibility for post-completion OPT at that education level. Ask how the programme’s internship design affects this rule before enrolling.
OPT and STEM OPT
Standard OPT
Eligible F-1 students may apply for temporary employment directly related to the major field of study. Standard OPT can provide up to 12 months at an education level, subject to eligibility, school recommendation and USCIS authorization.
STEM OPT extension
An eligible student with a qualifying U.S. STEM degree may apply for a 24-month STEM OPT extension, potentially creating up to 36 months of practical training. Additional requirements apply, including the exact degree and CIP code, employer eligibility and training-plan obligations.
Verify a STEM claim before choosing the course
- Ask the university for the exact CIP code.
- Confirm that the code is on the current DHS STEM list.
- Confirm the degree classification in university records and later on the I-20.
- Check that the programme is still worth its cost without a guaranteed STEM OPT outcome.
A programme title containing “technology,” “analytics,” “data” or “science” does not prove STEM designation.
F-2 Dependants
A spouse and unmarried minor children may apply for F-2 status using separate I-20s. Dependants do not pay the I-901 SEVIS fee, but their visa, insurance, housing, travel and living costs must be funded. F-2 employment is restricted, so do not build a family budget around spouse earnings.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can admission to a U.S. university guarantee an F-1 visa?
No. Admission is followed by the I-20 and visa process. A consular officer independently determines whether the applicant qualifies.
What is the difference between accreditation and SEVP certification?
Accreditation relates to academic institutional or programme status. SEVP certification allows an eligible school or campus to enrol F/M students and issue the relevant I-20.
How early can a new F-1 visa be issued?
Current Department of State guidance says a new F or M visa can be issued up to 365 days before the course start date, but entry is normally limited to no more than 30 days before that date.
Can campus work pay the full cost of study?
It should not be expected to. Jobs and hours are limited and not guaranteed. The degree should be funded without depending on immediate employment.
Does a STEM programme guarantee three years of OPT?
No. Standard OPT and the STEM extension require individual eligibility, the correct degree and CIP code, school recommendations, timely applications and qualifying employment conditions.
What happens after the programme or authorised training ends?
Current Department of State guidance generally gives F students a 60-day period after the programme end date, including authorised practical training, unless another valid action is taken.
