Scholarships for Indian students in the USA are not one national scheme. Funding can come from a university, an academic department, an assistantship, a private foundation, or a bilateral fellowship. Each route has different eligibility rules, deadlines, renewal conditions and coverage.

It is to build a shortlist where admission, funding and the remaining family or loan contribution work together.
Funding rule: Never subtract a scholarship from your budget until the university or sponsor confirms the amount, duration, covered costs and renewal conditions in writing.

EducationUSA advises students to begin financial planning early because competition is high and financial-aid applications often run alongside admission applications. That is especially important when an early scholarship deadline comes before a programme’s final admission deadline.
What Is Realistic at Each Degree Level?
Undergraduate
Look for automatic merit awards, separate competitive scholarships and the smaller group of institutions offering substantial need-based aid to international students.
Coursework master’s
Expect partial merit awards more often than full funding. Treat assistantships as competitive unless the department gives written details.
Research master’s or PhD
Investigate fellowships, tuition waivers, research assistantships and teaching assistantships before accepting an unfunded offer.
The same word can mean different things. A “full scholarship” may mean full tuition only, while “full funding” may include tuition, mandatory fees, health insurance and a living stipend. Ask for an itemised award.
Current Official Examples: Three Very Different Models
These examples show how funding structures differ. They are not promises that every applicant will receive aid.
1. ASU: international merit consideration
Arizona State University’s international cost-and-aid page says international first-year and transfer F-1 students may be considered for the New American University Scholarship based on high academic achievement. The important lesson is the structure: merit consideration is connected to admission, but the award does not automatically erase the full cost.
Compare any ASU award with the university’s published cost. The USA cost guide for Indian students records ASU’s 2026–27 international estimates at US$69,906 for undergraduates and US$66,646 for graduates, with ASU noting that some components can vary. A partial award can be valuable and still leave a large funding gap.
2. MIT: need-based aid rather than merit scholarships
MIT states that its undergraduate admissions are need-blind and that it meets 100% of demonstrated financial need. Its international-aid instructions require the CSS Profile and parental tax returns or income documentation, with English translations where applicable.
This is a different model from automatic merit aid. MIT also says its scholarships are based solely on financial need. Do not send a merit-scholarship pitch to a university that explicitly uses need-based aid.
3. Fulbright-Nehru: a specialised external route
The Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowship is not a general scholarship for every U.S. master’s applicant. The published 2026–27 programme was for selected fields and required, among other conditions, the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree, at least three years of full-time paid professional work relevant to the proposed field, leadership and community-service experience, and a commitment to return to India. The award could support up to two years.
USIEF publishes each cycle separately. As of this July 2026 review, applicants planning 2027 entry should use the live USIEF fellowship pages and current cycle announcement rather than copying an old deadline or eligibility list from a blog. If your experience or field does not fit, move to university and department funding instead of forcing the application.

Merit Aid, Need-Based Aid and Assistantships Are Not Interchangeable

Calculate Net Cost, Not the Scholarship Headline

Example
A university lists a US$70,000 annual cost and offers a US$15,000 renewable tuition scholarship. The practical result is not a “US$60,000 four-year scholarship” decision. The family still needs to plan roughly US$55,000 for year one before personal variation, and then check whether tuition and living costs rise while the scholarship remains fixed.
For an undergraduate degree, multiply carefully across four years. For a two-year master’s, check whether the award applies to both years, summer enrolment and the required number of credits.
Eight Conditions to Check in Every Award Letter
- Coverage: tuition only, tuition and fees, or full cost of attendance?
- Duration: one term, one year or the expected degree length?
- Renewal: automatic or reviewed each year?
- Academic standard: minimum GPA, satisfactory progress or credit load?
- Enrolment: full-time status or a minimum number of credits?
- Campus and programme: does changing major or campus end the award?
- Stacking: can it be combined with another scholarship or assistantship?
- Payment: credited against tuition or paid as a stipend, and when?
A renewable award with a demanding GPA condition is not guaranteed money for all years. Build a downside budget for losing or reducing it.
How to Evaluate a Graduate Assistantship
A written assistantship should state the appointment period, weekly duties, stipend, tuition benefit, fee treatment, health-insurance treatment and renewal rules. “Funding opportunities are available” is not an offer.
Ask the department these questions
- Are new international master’s students eligible in the first semester?
- Is selection part of admission or a separate process?
- How many students in this programme received assistantships last year?
- Does the tuition benefit cover all credits or a fixed amount?
- Which mandatory fees remain payable?
- Is summer funding included?
- What work is required and how many hours are expected?
- What academic standing is required for renewal?
For research roles, contact faculty only when your experience genuinely fits their work. A useful message names the research question, explains your relevant methods or project evidence, and asks whether the lab expects openings. Mass emails with the wrong professor name are an immediate credibility problem.
Can International Students Use FAFSA?
Most international students are not eligible for U.S. federal student aid. Federal Student Aid limits eligibility to U.S. citizens and specified eligible noncitizen categories. A university may still use its own institutional-aid process for international applicants.
Do not conclude “no FAFSA” means “no aid.” It means you must check the university’s international financial-aid page and the exact forms it requires. MIT, for example, directs international undergraduates to the CSS Profile and family income documentation.

These are planning windows, not universal deadlines. Undergraduate applications are commonly due between November and January for the following fall, according to EducationUSA, but every university and scholarship controls its own date. Use the dedicated USA university application timeline to sequence tests, documents, aid and the I-20.
Scholarship Red Flags
- A “guaranteed scholarship” requires a large payment to an agent.
- The award cannot be found on the university or sponsor’s official domain.
- The sender uses a free email address or pressures you to pay immediately.
- The scholarship is described as full funding but excludes living costs, insurance or fees.
- The award depends on future campus employment that is not confirmed.
- A consultancy reuses an expired deadline without linking to the current cycle.
- You are asked to provide bank passwords, OTPs or unnecessary identity documents.
- The offer letter does not name the amount and conditions.
