A USA university application timeline for 2027 must separate fixed dates from planning windows. Common App opens its new cycle on August 1, but universities control their own deadlines, testing rules, scholarship cut-offs and graduate application systems. EducationUSA says U.S. undergraduate applications are typically due between November and January for students starting the following September.

July–August 2026: Build a Shortlist That Can Survive Verification
Do not begin with 30 famous university names. Begin with programme fit and eliminate options that fail the basic checks.
Record these fields for every programme
- Exact university, campus, school and programme title.
- Degree level, duration, credit requirements and start term.
- Institutional and programme accreditation where relevant.
- SEVP certification for the exact school or campus.
- Application system and programme page.
- Admission, scholarship and assistantship deadlines.
- English-test and standardised-test policy.
- Published tuition, fees, living estimate and insurance.
- Application fee and fee-waiver route, if any.
- Curriculum, faculty, research or placement fit.

Undergraduate Applications: Common App Is a Platform, Not One Deadline
Common App says it serves more than 1,000 colleges. The platform opens the new cycle on August 1 each year, and its first-year guide lets applicants review each college’s testing, writing, deadline and recommendation requirements.
That does not make every member college identical. One college may require supplements and recommendations, another may not. One may be test-optional, another may require or consider scores under a different policy. Use the requirements grid as a planning aid, then confirm on the college’s own admissions site.
Understand the application plan before selecting it

Read the institution’s agreement before choosing an early plan. Do not assume the label has exactly the same restrictions everywhere.
Graduate Applications: The Department Often Controls the Process
Graduate programmes may use a university graduate portal, a central application service, or a school-specific system. Deadlines can differ between departments at the same university.
For every master’s or PhD option, check
- Whether the deadline is for admission, funding consideration or both.
- Whether the programme admits for fall, spring or only one intake.
- Minimum degree, prerequisite coursework and grade requirements.
- GRE or GMAT policy for that exact cycle.
- English-proficiency tests and waiver criteria.
- Statement prompts, word limits and writing sample rules.
- Number and type of recommenders.
- Faculty-contact expectations for research programmes.
- Transcript evaluation or official-document timing.
- Assistantship and fellowship process.
A university-wide page saying “GRE optional” is not enough if your department publishes a separate rule. Save a PDF or screenshot of the requirement page you relied on and note the date checked.
August–October 2026: Schedule Tests Backwards from the Earliest Deadline
SAT for 2027 undergraduate applicants
College Board’s official 2026 dates list weekend SAT administrations on August 22, September 12, October 3, November 7 and December 5, 2026. The corresponding regular registration deadlines are August 7, August 28, September 18, October 23 and November 20.
Do not register automatically. First check whether each target college requires, recommends, considers or does not use SAT or ACT scores for the 2026–27 application cycle. If scores matter, choose a test date that leaves time for score release and any retake before the deadline.
TOEFL
ETS says TOEFL iBT scores remain valid for two years. During the transition from January 2026 to January 2028, score reports show the CEFR level, the new 1–6 scores and a comparable 1–120 overall score. Each institution still sets its own accepted tests and minimums.
A valid score is not automatically an acceptable score. Check section minimums, MyBest acceptance, home-edition policy and waiver rules at each university.
GRE, GMAT, IELTS and other tests
Use the programme’s current page. “Optional” can mean you may submit a score if it strengthens the file; “not required” may still differ from “not accepted.” Record the wording rather than reducing every policy to yes or no.

Academic records
Confirm whether the university wants scanned unofficial copies at application, documents sent directly by the institution, a sealed transcript, a credential evaluation, or official records only after admission. Do not send originals unless instructed.
Name and date consistency
Your passport name should guide identity fields. If marksheets, degree records or test accounts use a different order, spelling or initial, contact the university early and keep supporting evidence.
Resume or CV
Graduate applications commonly need a concise record of education, projects, research, internships, employment, skills, publications and achievements. Every claim should be defensible. Avoid copying job-resume keywords that do not reflect your work.
September–October 2026: Write for the Exact Prompt
An SOP is not one universal essay with the university name replaced. Map each prompt before drafting:
- What academic preparation does the programme ask you to explain?
- Which projects, research or work prove readiness?
- Why this curriculum, concentration, faculty or facility?
- What problem or career direction will the degree support?
- What does the prompt ask about community, leadership or context?
- What word or character limit controls the answer?
Use examples with decisions and outcomes. “I have always been passionate about technology” is weaker than a specific project problem, the method you chose, what failed and what you learned.
Letters of Recommendation: Give Recommenders Time and Evidence
Ask at least four to six weeks before the earliest deadline where possible. Choose people who can describe your academic, research or professional work with examples, not simply the person with the highest title.
Send each recommender
- Programme list and exact deadlines.
- Your current resume or CV.
- A short summary of work completed with them.
- Relevant projects, grades, reports or achievements.
- The programme’s recommendation instructions.
- A polite reminder schedule.
Universities may require recommenders to upload letters directly. Do not create fake recommender accounts, draft undisclosed letters, or submit a letter without the recommender’s approval.
October 2026–January 2027: Submit a Complete Application
Submit before the final hours. Time-zone confusion, payment failures, recommender delays and document-upload problems are preventable risks.
Funding Runs in Parallel, Not After Admission
EducationUSA says financial-aid applications often go together with admission applications. Create a separate deadline column for automatic merit consideration, competitive scholarships, need-based forms and departmental funding.

January–April 2027: Compare Offers on More Than Rank

March–June 2027: Accept the Offer and Secure Form I-20
After choosing one university, follow its acceptance, deposit and financial-document instructions. A SEVP-certified school issues Form I-20 after the admission and eligibility process is complete.
Check the I-20 immediately
- Name and date of birth match the passport.
- School and campus are correct.
- Degree level, major and programme dates are correct.
- Estimated costs match the university information.
- Funding sources and amounts are accurate.
- SEVIS ID is used consistently.
The I-20 is not the visa. It is the certificate of eligibility that connects the university process to the F-1 process.
After the I-20: SEVIS, DS-160 and the F-1 Visa
- Pay the I-901 SEVIS fee using the correct SEVIS ID.
- Complete Form DS-160 accurately.
- Pay the visa application fee and follow the U.S. Embassy or Consulate appointment process.
- Prepare academic, financial and programme evidence.
- Attend the interview if required.
- Do not buy non-refundable travel before visa issuance.
The current I-901 SEVIS fee for an F or M student is US$350, and the student-visa application fee is US$185. The Department of State says new F and M visas can be issued up to 365 days before the programme start date, but a new student cannot enter more than 30 days before that date.
Failure Cases That Commonly Break the Timeline
- The student tracks the admission deadline but misses an earlier scholarship deadline.
- A transcript is uploaded, but the programme required a credential evaluation.
- The recommender receives the link after the deadline.
- A test is booked without checking whether the programme accepts it.
- One generic SOP is sent to programmes with different prompts.
- An offer is accepted before comparing the I-20 amount and full degree cost.
- The student assumes every “data” programme has a STEM-eligible CIP code.
- Visa preparation begins before the I-20 details are checked.
