To study in the Netherlands in 2027, Indian students must coordinate the exact programme, NVAO accreditation, institution type, Studielink or institutional application, tuition, housing, proof of funds, the recognised-sponsor visa process and Dutch work rules. Admission alone does not complete the residence process.

Who Should Seriously Consider the Netherlands?

Research University vs University of Applied Sciences

Neither type is automatically better. A research university can suit students aiming for theoretical depth, research or doctoral preparation. A university of applied sciences can suit students seeking structured practical training. Verify the programme outcome rather than choosing by the word “university”.

Degree and Programme Checks

Dutch higher education includes associate degrees, bachelor’s, master’s and doctorates. Programme duration and title vary by sector. Before applying, record:

• Exact degree title and study level.
• Research-university or applied-sciences route.
• NVAO accreditation status.
• Full-time, part-time or dual variant.
• Campus and teaching language.
• Internship or thesis requirement.
• Progression route to a later master’s or doctorate.

How Applications Work

For most programmes, applicants first register through Studielink, the official Dutch higher-education application portal. Some institutions use another process for international applicants, so the exact programme page controls.

Numerus fixus

• Capacity-limited programmes can have selection.
• If Studielink applies, the current national deadline is 15 January at 23:59 CET.
• You can normally submit a maximum of two numerus-fixus applications per academic year.
• Selection takes place between 15 January and 15 April.
• Ranking numbers are released on 15 April.
• An offered place must be accepted in Studielink within two weeks.

Student Residence Permit and MVV

For Indian students studying longer than 90 days, the institution normally starts the entry-and-residence procedure. Only an educational institution recognised by the IND as a sponsor for study can apply for the student residence permit.

Current requirements include

• Registration or temporary registration at the institution.
• An accredited programme.
• Sufficient funds.
• General immigration requirements.
• Academic progress after enrolment.

The current 2026 IND application fee for study is €254. Fees are indexed each year, so recheck for 2027.

Study progress

IND guidance states that international students must normally obtain at least 50% of the credits each academic year, unless an accepted reason applies. The institution monitors progress as the recognised sponsor.

Proof of Funds

The 2026 IND study norm for HBO or university students is €1,130.77 per month. This amount excludes tuition. The student must normally show enough for 12 months through the institution.

The norm changes on 1 January. A September 2027 applicant must use the amount requested by the institution and IND for that procedure.

Tuition and Cost Reality

Study in NL currently gives average non-EEA tuition ranges of €9,000–€20,000 per year for bachelor’s and €12,000–€30,000 for master’s. Exact programme fees can be higher or lower.

Housing Is a Pre-Arrival Requirement, Not a Later Task

Study in NL explicitly warns that the country has a severe housing shortage and not enough student housing for everyone. Students are advised to arrange housing before arrival.

Housing red flags

• Pressure to pay before a live video viewing or reliable verification.
• Cash-only rent without receipt.
• No written contract.
• Unclear registration at the address.
• Brokerage charges that are not properly explained.
• A room far from the campus without transport-cost planning.

Work Rights While Studying

An employer needs a TWV work permit for a non-EEA student employee. The student must choose one of the current options:

• Up to 16 hours per week during the year; or
• Full-time work in June, July and August.

Self-employed activity is permitted while the student continues meeting residence conditions, but tax, registration and insurance rules apply. A part-time job also changes health-insurance requirements: students working as employees generally need Dutch public health insurance.

Orientation Year After Graduation

Eligible graduates can apply for a one-year orientation-year residence permit to seek work or start a business. The permit cannot be extended, but graduates may later move to another qualifying residence route.
