Home›Scholarships & Costs›Cost of Studying in UK for Indian Students 2027
The cost of studying in the UK for an Indian student is not one tuition number. A workable 2027 plan must include the exact course fee, university deposit, accommodation contract, food, transport, Student visa fee, Immigration Health Surcharge, TB and ATAS costs where relevant, flights, initial setup, exchange-rate movement and an emergency reserve.
This guide separates three different numbers: the university price, the UKVI financial requirement and the real amount you may spend. The first comes from the university, the second from GOV.UK and the third depends on city, housing, lifestyle and programme length.
Core budgeting rule: calculate the full programme cost before accepting an offer. Do not stop at the first-year tuition figure, the UKVI maintenance minimum or an agent’s estimate of the deposit.

The Complete UK Study-Cost Formula
application and test costs
+ tuition for every academic year
+ compulsory course and university fees
+ accommodation for the full contract
+ food, utilities, phone and transport
+ Student visa fee and IHS
+ TB test, ATAS and document costs where relevant
+ flight, baggage and initial setup
+ annual fee and rent increases
+ emergency reserve
+ education-loan interest
− confirmed scholarships or sponsorship
Visa evidence
The amount UKVI requires you to demonstrate for unpaid first-year tuition and maintenance.
Real cash flow
The money required for the deposit, visa, IHS, accommodation, travel and term payments.
Programme risk
Fee increases, rent growth, exchange-rate movement, loan interest and unexpected expenses.
UK Tuition Planning for 2027
The British Council currently publishes broad international tuition ranges of £11,400–£38,000 per year for undergraduate study and £9,000–£30,000 for postgraduate study. These are sector planning ranges, not maximum prices. Laboratory, engineering, clinical, business and highly specialised programmes can cost more.
| Programme route | How to budget | Main cost risks |
|---|---|---|
| Three-year undergraduate degree | Model tuition for all three years, not year one only | Annual fee increases, placement years, Scotland’s four-year structure |
| One-year taught master’s | Use the complete course fee plus 12–15 months of living and visa-related costs | Compressed payment schedule and short job-search window |
| Two-year master’s or placement master’s | Confirm whether the second year has full, reduced or placement tuition | Additional rent, IHS, placement travel and fee growth |
| MBA or professional master’s | Use the exact course page and offer; broad postgraduate averages are often misleading | Premium fees, deposits, study trips and professional materials |
| Research master’s or PhD | Calculate net cost after written stipend, fee waiver and funding duration | Funding may not cover the writing-up period, extensions or dependants |
Questions to answer before accepting the fee
- Is the quoted amount for one year or the full course?
- Is the fee fixed or likely to rise each academic year?
- Are laboratory, field trip, studio, placement or examination costs separate?
- What deposit is required and when does it become non-refundable?
- Does the visa-refusal refund exclude administrative charges?
- Is the scholarship already confirmed and reflected in writing?
Check the institution, awarding body, campus and sponsor status through How to Verify a UK University before paying a deposit.
Current UK Student Visa Financial Requirement
UKVI requires enough money for the unpaid course fee shown on the CAS for one academic year, up to nine months, plus maintenance.
| Campus location | Monthly maintenance | Maximum for nine months |
|---|---|---|
| London | £1,529 | £13,761 |
| Outside London | £1,171 | £10,539 |
London means the City of London and the 32 London boroughs. The rate follows the campus location, not the address where you hope to rent.
28-day and 31-day rules
- The full required balance must normally be held for 28 consecutive days.
- The end of that 28-day period must be within 31 days of the visa application date.
- If the balance falls below the required amount on one day, the qualifying period may need to restart.
- India is not on the current differential-evidence list, so Indian applicants should submit compliant financial evidence with the application.
What can reduce the required figure?
- Tuition already paid, when correctly recorded on the CAS.
- Up to £1,529 paid for university-owned or university-managed accommodation, when recorded on the CAS.
- Qualifying official financial sponsorship or an eligible education loan supported by the required evidence.
The visa minimum is not a spending promise. A student can satisfy UKVI and still have an unsafe real-world budget if rent, contract length, deposits or daily costs are higher than expected.
Student Visa Fee and Immigration Health Surcharge
| Charge | Current amount | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Student visa application | £558 | Applies to an outside-UK application and currently also to extending or switching inside the UK |
| IHS student rate | £776 per year | Calculated from visa duration, which can be longer than the course |
| IHS half-year component | £388 | Can apply under the official part-year calculation rules |
| Priority service | Additional charge where available | Do not assume availability or build the timeline around it |
A one-year master’s visa often produces an IHS charge of £1,164 or £1,552 depending on the exact period of leave. The online application calculates the final amount. Use an estimate only for planning.
UK City Living-Cost Comparison
The following are GradVix planning ranges for one student using shared accommodation and controlled spending. They are built around the British Council’s current national guidance—approximately £1,300–£1,400 per month in London and £900–£1,300 in the rest of the UK—then widened to reflect housing and setup risk. They are not official city averages or guaranteed prices.
| City or study area | Shared-housing planning range per month | Annual living-cost planning range | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| London | £1,400–£2,100 | £16,800–£25,200 | High rent, advance payments and commuting |
| Oxford / Cambridge | £1,200–£1,750 | £14,400–£21,000 | Housing scarcity despite smaller city size |
| Edinburgh / Bristol | £1,100–£1,650 | £13,200–£19,800 | Strong rental demand and seasonal pressure |
| Manchester / Birmingham | £1,000–£1,500 | £12,000–£18,000 | Wide difference between central and outer areas |
| Glasgow / Leeds | £950–£1,450 | £11,400–£17,400 | Rent and transport vary by campus location |
| Sheffield / Nottingham / Newcastle | £900–£1,350 | £10,800–£16,200 | Lower-cost potential depends on securing housing early |
| Cardiff / Belfast | £900–£1,350 | £10,800–£16,200 | Availability, heating and travel-home costs |
Use the lower end only when a genuine shared-room option is available, bills are controlled and the commute is practical. Use the upper end for private halls, late booking, en-suite rooms, frequent eating out or a longer accommodation contract.
Accommodation: The Largest Variable After Tuition
University halls
Halls can simplify the first year because furniture, utilities, internet or basic support may be bundled. Compare the complete contract price, not the weekly headline. A 44-week and a 51-week contract produce very different totals.
Private student accommodation
Purpose-built student accommodation can be convenient but may be the most expensive option. Check deposit, guarantor requirements, instalment dates, cancellation terms and whether you remain liable after a visa delay.
Shared private rental
A room in a shared house may reduce cost, but verify:
- Whether gas, electricity, water and internet are included.
- Deposit protection and advance-rent requirements.
- Furniture and kitchen equipment.
- Distance from the exact campus and transport cost.
- Contract length, summer liability and replacement-tenant rules.
- Whether the listing, landlord and payment account are genuine.
Independent studio or apartment
Do not use a shared-room budget if your actual plan requires a studio. The difference can add several thousand pounds to a one-year course.
Typical Monthly Student Budget
| Expense | Lower-cost city/shared plan | London or high-cost plan |
|---|---|---|
| Rent and utilities | £650–£950 | £950–£1,550 |
| Groceries and basic food | £180–£280 | £220–£350 |
| Local transport | £45–£90 | £90–£160 |
| Phone and internet share | £20–£50 | £25–£60 |
| Personal, clothing and basic recreation | £100–£220 | £150–£300 |
| Indicative monthly total | £995–£1,590 | £1,435–£2,420 |
Pre-Departure and First-Month Costs
| Cost item | Planning provision | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| English test and score reports | Use provider’s current fee | Confirm whether a SELT is required |
| TB test | Verify approved-clinic fee in India | Required for many applicants coming for more than six months |
| ATAS and supporting documents | ATAS itself has no application fee | Translation, courier or document costs may still apply |
| Student visa | £558 | Current fee; recheck at payment |
| IHS | Depends on visa length | Paid upfront with the visa application |
| One-way flight from India | £450–£900 | Season, route and baggage affect cost |
| Housing deposit and advance rent | £800–£4,000+ | Can be substantially higher without a UK guarantor |
| Initial setup | £500–£1,500 | Bedding, kitchen items, transport, winter clothing and devices |
| Emergency reserve | £2,000–£4,000 | Keep separate from normal monthly spending |
Three Complete Worked UK Budgets
These are transparent planning scenarios, not university quotations. Replace every assumption with the exact course fee, accommodation contract and visa calculation for your offer.
Worked Budget 1: One-Year MSc Outside London
Assumptions: £24,000 tuition, £15,000 living costs, £1,722 for visa and illustrative IHS, and £4,000 for flight, setup, course materials and emergency reserve.
| Component | Amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition | £24,000 |
| Living cost for 12 months | £15,000 |
| Student visa and illustrative IHS | £1,722 |
| Flight, setup, materials and reserve | £4,000 |
| Estimated total | £44,722 |
Worked Budget 2: One-Year Master’s in London
Assumptions: £32,000 tuition, £20,400 living costs, £1,722 for visa and illustrative IHS, and £5,000 for flight, setup, materials and emergency reserve.
| Component | Amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition | £32,000 |
| Living cost for 12 months | £20,400 |
| Student visa and illustrative IHS | £1,722 |
| Flight, setup, materials and reserve | £5,000 |
| Estimated total | £59,122 |
Worked Budget 3: Three-Year Undergraduate Degree Outside London
Assumptions: £22,000 first-year tuition, £13,200 first-year living cost, 4% annual growth in both, £1,500 a year for books and compulsory extras, £3,274 illustrative visa/IHS provision and £4,000 setup and reserve.
| Year | Tuition | Living | Books/extras | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Year 1 | £22,000 | £13,200 | £1,500 | £36,700 |
| Year 2 | £22,880 | £13,728 | £1,500 | £38,108 |
| Year 3 | £23,795 | £14,277 | £1,500 | £39,572 |
| Visa/IHS provision and setup/reserve | Illustrative planning provision | £7,274 | ||
| Estimated programme total | £121,654 | |||
The undergraduate example demonstrates why multiplying year-one tuition by three understates risk. It still excludes education-loan interest and travel home during the course.
GBP-to-INR Sensitivity
Do not treat one exchange rate as permanent. Use at least three planning rates before deciding affordability.
Using the London master’s example of £59,122:
| Planning rate | Approximate INR requirement |
|---|---|
| ₹105 per £1 | ₹62.08 lakh |
| ₹110 per £1 | ₹65.03 lakh |
| ₹115 per £1 | ₹67.99 lakh |
A ten-rupee movement in sterling changes this example by about ₹5.91 lakh. This is before bank forex spread, transfer fees or loan interest.
Currency-risk controls
- Keep a 5%–10% exchange-rate buffer.
- Record every payment date and the currency required.
- Compare bank, remittance and education-loan forex margins.
- Do not convert the entire amount too early without understanding refund and currency risk.
- Do not leave mandatory payments until the final day.
Cash-Flow Timeline
| Stage | Likely payments | Risk to control |
|---|---|---|
| Application stage | Tests, application fee where charged, transcripts, portfolio | Pay only through official channels |
| Offer acceptance | Tuition deposit | Check refund, CAS and scholarship conditions |
| Before visa | Funds held for 28 days, TB test, ATAS preparation | Protect the qualifying balance |
| Visa submission | £558 fee and full IHS | Use the actual CAS dates |
| Housing booking | Deposit, first instalment or advance rent | Check visa-delay and cancellation clauses |
| Before travel | Flight, baggage and initial purchases | Avoid non-refundable travel before approval |
| After arrival | Remaining accommodation, tuition instalments and monthly costs | Maintain emergency liquidity |
Scholarship and Education-Loan Treatment
Subtract a scholarship only after receiving a written award that confirms the amount, course, intake and conditions. A scholarship application acknowledgement has no budgeting value.
Use the UK Scholarships for Indian Students 2027 guide to separate confirmed 2027 funding from previous-round references.
Education-loan stress test
- Confirm sanctioned amount, margin money and collateral conditions.
- Check whether living expenses and IHS are covered.
- Model interest during study and moratorium.
- Use a conservative post-study salary and job-search period.
- Plan around the 18-month Graduate visa window applying from 1 January 2027, not an assumed two-year window.
Safe, Stretched and Unsafe UK Budgets
| Position | Characteristics | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Safer | Full programme is funded, exchange and emergency buffers exist, and part-time work is optional | Proceed after verification and written fee checks |
| Stretched | Large loan, small reserve, budget works only at the cheapest rent or with immediate work | Reduce cost, change city/course or strengthen funding |
| Unsafe | Only the visa minimum is available, scholarship is unconfirmed, or later years are unexplained | Do not pay the deposit yet |
Reconsider the offer when
- The degree only appears affordable after expected part-time earnings.
- The family must liquidate essential assets without a repayment plan.
- The university will not provide clear refund and payment terms.
- London is chosen for brand value even though a comparable outside-London course is financially safer.
- The loan repayment remains unmanageable under a conservative salary scenario.
Common UK Cost Mistakes
| Mistake | Why it fails | Better action |
|---|---|---|
| Using £10,539 as the entire annual budget | It is a visa threshold outside London, not a guaranteed 12-month cost | Use the accommodation contract and a full 12-month plan |
| Ignoring contract length | A cheaper weekly rent can cost more over 51 weeks | Compare complete contract values |
| Subtracting an expected scholarship | The award may not arrive or may apply after payment | Subtract only written confirmed funding |
| Assuming fees remain fixed | Multi-year tuition and rent may rise | Model annual increases |
| Using one rupee exchange rate | Sterling movement can add lakhs | Use three-rate sensitivity |
| Counting future part-time income for the visa | Future earnings do not satisfy the financial requirement | Fund the course before travel |
| Paying private accommodation before visa approval | Cancellation terms may create a large loss | Use flexible or visa-protected terms |

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to study in the UK for an Indian student in 2027?
There is no single total. A one-year master’s can range from roughly the mid-£40,000s outside London to around £60,000 or more in London once tuition, living costs, visa, IHS, travel, setup and a reserve are included. Exact cost depends on the course and housing.
How much money must an Indian student show for a UK Student visa?
You normally need unpaid first-year tuition shown on the CAS plus £13,761 for a London campus or £10,539 outside London for a course of nine months or longer, subject to the current financial-evidence rules.
Is the UKVI maintenance amount enough for a full year?
Not necessarily. It is an immigration threshold capped at nine months. Real spending depends on the accommodation contract, city, bills, transport and lifestyle.
How much is the UK Student visa and IHS?
The current Student visa fee is £558. The student IHS rate is £776 per year, with the final total calculated from the visa length.
Can part-time work pay for UK tuition and living costs?
Part-time work may help with some daily expenses but should not be the condition that makes the degree affordable. Work is limited, employment is not guaranteed and future earnings cannot replace required visa funds.
Should I choose London or a lower-cost UK city?
Choose based on course quality, career fit and complete cost. London may offer advantages for some fields, but the higher rent and maintenance requirement can add several lakh rupees to the plan.
