Home›University Applications›UK University Application Timeline 2027
A UK university application timeline for 2027 must separate undergraduate UCAS dates from postgraduate university deadlines. UCAS publishes national milestones for most bachelor’s applications; master’s and PhD programmes usually set their own deadlines and can close when places fill. Use the Study in UK for Indian Students 2027 guide for the visa rules, then follow this month-by-month plan from shortlist to travel.
The strongest date is not the last date a form accepts submissions. It is the date that leaves enough time for tests, references, scholarships, offer conditions, a CAS, the 28-day funds period and the Student visa.
Confirmed 2027 UCAS dates: 15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses; 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time for most other undergraduate courses. Postgraduate deadlines are course-specific.

Official UK Undergraduate Dates for 2027 Entry
| UCAS milestone | Official date | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 2027 courses displayed | 28 April 2026 | Students can begin researching courses in the new cycle. |
| UCAS application opens | 12 May 2026 | You can start entering information, but cannot yet submit the completed application. |
| Completed applications can be submitted | 1 September 2026 | UCAS starts sending 2027 applications to providers. |
| Oxford, Cambridge, most medicine, dentistry and veterinary deadline | 15 October 2026, 18:00 UK time | Equal-consideration deadline; related admissions tests can have separate registration dates. |
| Most undergraduate courses | 13 January 2027, 18:00 UK time | Main equal-consideration deadline. |
| UCAS Extra opens | 25 February 2027 | For eligible applicants not holding an offer after using their choices. |
| Last date before applications enter Clearing automatically | 30 June 2027, 18:00 UK time | Later applications can still be considered where vacancies remain, but equal consideration has passed. |
| Last date to add an Extra choice | 1 July 2027 | Extra ends. |
| Clearing opens | 2 July 2027 | Vacancies become available through Clearing. |
| Final 2027 application date | 23 September 2027, 18:00 UK time | After this, new 2027 applications cannot be submitted. |
| Last date to add a Clearing choice | 18 October 2027 | Final Clearing-choice milestone for the cycle. |
Equal consideration does not mean guaranteed admission. It means a provider must consider applications received by the relevant deadline fairly under its process. Applying after that date can still work when a course remains open, but the applicant carries more capacity risk.
Undergraduate and Postgraduate Applications Use Different Systems
Undergraduate
- Most applications go through UCAS.
- One application can include multiple choices under UCAS rules.
- The 2027 application uses three structured personal-statement questions rather than one free-form essay.
- Course-specific tests, portfolios and interviews can sit outside UCAS.
Taught postgraduate
- Most applications go directly to each university.
- No single national deadline applies.
- Courses can close when full.
- Scholarship deadlines may arrive before the course’s final deadline.
Research degrees
- Supervisor or project fit may come before the formal application.
- Funding deadlines can be many months earlier.
- Research proposal and reference requirements are department-specific.
- ATAS may apply to certain subjects.
Whichever route you use, check the exact institution, awarding body, campus and sponsor status through How to Verify a UK University before paying an application fee or deposit.
April to July 2026: Build the Shortlist and Evidence
- Choose a subject and career outcome before choosing a ranking.
- Verify entry requirements against Indian qualifications, including grade scale, prerequisite subjects and accepted English evidence.
- Compare total cost, not tuition alone, with the Cost of Studying in UK guide.
- Create a document inventory: passports, transcripts, degree certificates, current-study records, references, CV, portfolio and work evidence.
- For undergraduate applicants, review courses visible from 28 April and begin the UCAS form from 12 May.
- For Rhodes India 2027, note the unusually early 23 July 2026 closing date.
Decision checkpoint
Remove any course that fails one of four tests: academic eligibility, recognition, full-budget affordability or a credible career reason. A famous university that fails the cost test is not a realistic shortlist choice.
August to October 2026: Start Applications and Hit Early Funding Dates
| Date/window | Action |
|---|---|
| 4 August 2026 | Chevening 2027–28 opens at 11:00 UTC. |
| August | Confirm referees, finalise course evidence, register for any admissions tests and check scholarship-specific course eligibility. |
| 1 September 2026 | UCAS begins accepting completed 2027 applications. |
| September | Submit strong postgraduate applications where scholarship or capacity pressure is high. |
| 6 October 2026 | Chevening closes at 11:00 UTC. |
| 15 October 2026 | UCAS early deadline at 18:00 UK time for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary applications. |
Admissions-test registration can close before the UCAS application deadline. The application timeline must therefore include every external test, portfolio or interview requirement listed by the university, not only the central form deadline.
November 2026 to January 2027: Submit the Main Wave
- Submit postgraduate applications as soon as the course, documents and statement are ready. Do not wait for a universal January deadline that does not exist.
- Track whether each application is complete; a submitted form can remain unreviewed because a reference, transcript or fee is missing.
- Prepare for interviews and written work where required.
- Submit most undergraduate applications by 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time.
- Record every scholarship separately: application date, offer requirement, decision date and conditions.
Use the broader University Application Checklist to control documents across several institutions without mixing versions.
Scholarship Dates Must Sit Inside the University Timeline
Funding is not a later task. Chevening closes in October 2026 but gives successful candidates until 8 July 2027 to submit at least one unconditional university offer. GREAT and university awards set their own dates. Commonwealth applicants must use both the CSC system and a nominator, whose deadline may be earlier.
Build one calendar containing university, scholarship and visa actions. The Scholarships for Indian Students in UK guide lists which 2027 dates are confirmed and which rounds are still pending.
February to May 2027: Compare Offers, Meet Conditions and Secure Funding
- Compare offers by exact course, modules, campus, duration, tuition, deposit, scholarship and professional recognition.
- Do not accept an offer only because its deposit deadline is first. Ask for clarification or an extension when needed.
- Complete final academic, English-language or document conditions.
- Apply for university scholarships that require an offer.
- For undergraduate applicants without an offer, check UCAS Extra from 25 February if eligible.
- Begin arranging funds early enough to protect the 28-day bank period later.
Offer versus CAS: an offer is an admission decision. A CAS is the electronic sponsorship record used for the Student visa. Universities normally issue a CAS only after conditions, identity checks, required payments and their compliance process are complete.
June to August 2027: CAS, 28-Day Funds and Student Visa
- Make the offer unconditional. Upload final results and meet English or academic conditions.
- Check the CAS draft. Match name, passport, course, campus, dates, tuition and payments.
- Complete the 28-day funds period. Show unpaid first-year tuition plus £13,761 in London or £10,539 outside London for a course of nine months or longer. The closing date must be within 31 days of the application.
- Prepare TB and ATAS evidence. Indian applicants studying for more than six months normally need a TB certificate from an approved clinic; some postgraduate science and technology courses require ATAS.
- Apply for the visa. From outside the UK, the earliest application is six months before the course starts. The current fee is £558 plus IHS.
- Allow decision time. GOV.UK says outside-UK applications usually take three weeks, but complex cases can take longer.
- Verify the eVisa and travel document. Do not book non-refundable travel before the decision.
For courses starting in September 2027, the legal six-month window can open in March, but most students cannot apply then because the CAS, final results or finances are not ready. Your practical visa date is the latest of: CAS ready, TB/ATAS ready and the compliant funds period complete.
Prepare the CV Before Applications Open
UK postgraduate and scholarship applications repeatedly ask for education, work, projects and achievements. Keep one accurate master CV and adapt it to each course rather than rebuilding the evidence under deadline pressure.
Timeline Failure Cases
| Failure | What went wrong | Prevention |
|---|---|---|
| Applying on the advertised final day | The course had already filled or scholarship consideration had closed. | Use a personal target 4–8 weeks earlier. |
| Missing an admissions-test registration | The UCAS form was on time, but the external test window had closed. | Track tests and portfolios as separate deadlines. |
| Reference not submitted | The applicant completed their section but the application remained incomplete. | Give referees a written deadline and verify receipt. |
| Deposit paid before verification | The student later discovered a partner campus or wrong awarding arrangement. | Run recognition and sponsor checks first. |
| Funds moved too late | The 28-day period could not finish before the intended visa date. | Work backwards from travel and protect the balance. |
| Flight booked before visa | A delayed decision created a large cancellation loss. | Wait for the decision or use flexible terms. |

Frequently Asked Questions
When should Indian students apply to UK universities for 2027?
For most September 2027 postgraduate courses, begin shortlisting by mid-2026 and submit strong applications from September to December 2026, because each university sets its own deadline. For undergraduate UCAS applications, completed applications can be submitted from 1 September 2026.
What is the main UCAS deadline for 2027 entry?
The equal-consideration deadline for most undergraduate courses is 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time. Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses use 15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time.
Do UK postgraduate applications have one national deadline?
No. Most master’s and PhD applications are made directly to universities, and deadlines vary by course, department, scholarship and capacity. A course can close early when places fill even if a later final date is displayed.
How early can I apply for a UK Student visa?
When applying from outside the UK, the earliest date is six months before the course starts. You still need a CAS and compliant documents, and should not apply until the financial evidence period is complete.
How long does a UK Student visa decision take?
GOV.UK says an application made outside the UK usually receives a decision within three weeks, although document checks, interviews or complex circumstances can take longer.
Should I wait for a scholarship result before applying to universities?
Usually no. Many scholarships require a course application or an unconditional offer by a later deadline. Chevening 2027–28, for example, closes on 6 October 2026 and requires at least one unconditional UK offer by 8 July 2027.
