Germany University Application Timeline 2027: APS, dMAT, uni-assist and Visa

HomeUniversity ApplicationsGermany University Application Timeline 2027

Updated July 2026Official-source 2027 application planFor Indian students

A Germany university application timeline for 2027 must coordinate at least six separate clocks: academic eligibility, APS verification, dMAT where applicable, the university or uni-assist application, scholarship deadlines, and the student-visa process. The commonly quoted 15 July and 15 January dates are only frequent patterns—not national deadlines for every course.

Start with the complete Germany guide for Indian students. This page turns that decision framework into a month-by-month execution plan for summer and winter 2027 entry, with separate instructions for direct applications, uni-assist and VPD routes.

Core timeline rule: Work backward from the exact programme deadline, then add time for APS, dMAT, document corrections, VPD or uni-assist processing, funding and the visa. A university deadline is the last acceptable submission point—not a safe starting date.

Winter Semester or Summer Semester?

Intake Typical academic start Common application pattern Planning implication
Winter semester 2027/28 Usually September or October 2027, depending on the institution Many programmes use deadlines between March and July 2027; 15 July is common but not universal Usually offers the widest programme choice, but visa and housing demand can be heavier
Summer semester 2027 Usually March or April 2027 Many programmes use deadlines between October 2026 and January 2027; 15 January is common but not universal Fewer programmes may be available, and Indian applicants in selected master’s fields must account for the new dMAT-linked APS process

Some master’s programmes, Studienkolleg routes, restricted-admission courses and international programmes close much earlier. Others use rolling or programme-specific dates. Record the deadline from the exact programme page, not from a general university homepage.

Before committing to an intake, verify the institution, programme, campus and recognition through the German university verification guide.

Three Main Application Routes

Route What you submit Who evaluates first Timeline risk
Direct university application Application and documents through the university’s own portal The university Department-specific documents, portal opening dates and earlier master’s deadlines
Standard uni-assist application Application, documents and fee through My assist uni-assist evaluates the international credentials and forwards an eligible application according to the university procedure Incomplete documents, late payment or relying on the last day despite processing queues
VPD procedure First request a VPD from uni-assist; then submit the VPD and application directly to the university uni-assist issues the preliminary review; the university receives the final application separately Receiving the VPD but forgetting the second university submission

VPD is not an application offer. It records how uni-assist evaluated your documents and German-equivalent grade. You must still apply directly to the university before its deadline.

The Exact Germany Deadline Rules

uni-assist states that the deadline is set by the university and that the online application and complete documents must be in My assist before that deadline. It recommends applying at least eight weeks early.

Common dates—but not guarantees

  • 15 July: often used for winter-semester entry.
  • 15 January: often used for summer-semester entry.
  • Earlier dates: common for some master’s programmes, Studienkolleg, preparatory language courses and scholarship-linked applications.
  • Different applicant dates: some universities use separate deadlines for non-EU credentials, restricted courses or specific application routes.

As of 6 July 2026, uni-assist’s live processing estimate for educational credentials from Asia is seven to eight weeks. Its usual general estimate is four to six weeks, but applicants should plan using the current longer figure and recheck before submission.

Safe deadline formula:
Official programme deadline
− current processing time
− document-correction buffer
− payment and upload buffer
= your personal submission deadline

Example

If a programme closes on 15 July 2027 and uses standard uni-assist, a prudent personal submission target is in May, not 14 July. If the programme requires a VPD, request it even earlier because the VPD must be issued and then submitted in a separate university application before 15 July.

Summer Semester 2027 Timeline

Summer 2027 requires earlier action because many application windows fall in late 2026 and early January 2027.

Period Required action Do not postpone
July–August 2026 Confirm which programmes actually offer summer entry; verify academic prerequisites and application route APS procedure, language-test booking and dMAT classification
By 15 September 2026 For affected applicants, complete registration for the first announced dMAT date Test-centre booking; seats are handled by g.a.s.t.
26 September 2026 First announced dMAT test date Do not assume a later test will fit your course deadline
12 October 2026 First announced dMAT certificates become available online Submit the certificate to APS where the requirement applies
October–November 2026 Submit early direct, uni-assist and VPD requests; complete scholarship applications Document corrections and translations
December 2026 Complete remaining applications and the second university step for VPD routes Do not rely on holiday-period responses
By programme deadline, often no later than 15 January 2027 Ensure the complete final application is submitted through the correct system Payment, final uploads and VPD submission
January–March 2027 Resolve offer conditions, funding, visa, insurance, housing and enrolment Visa preparation and arrival liquidity

The official dMAT page currently publishes one initial test schedule. Applicants must recheck the live dMAT and APS pages for later test dates rather than assuming the first schedule repeats unchanged.

dMAT for Selected Indian Master’s Applicants

APS India introduced the Digital Master Test as an additional element in APS documentation for selected master’s applicants. It applies where the applicant’s previous degree falls within the official affected-field list, currently covering:

  • Engineering.
  • Commerce, accounting, finance and economics.
  • Business and management.

For affected applicants, dMAT is required for APS applications connected to the summer semester 2027 intake and subsequent intakes, unless a transitional or programme exemption applies.

Current first-test milestone Date or rule
Registration opened 29 June 2026
Registration deadline 15 September 2026
First test date 26 September 2026
Certificate available 12 October 2026
Current test fee €150, charged by g.a.s.t.

Current exemptions and limits

  • Applicants who completed APS online registration before 29 June 2026 are exempt for that procedure.
  • Applicants who shipped complete APS documents before 29 June 2026 are exempt for that procedure.
  • Applicants who already completed APS and received the certificate do not take dMAT for that completed procedure.
  • Bachelor’s applicants, PhD applicants and applicants outside the affected fields are not covered by the current requirement.
  • Officially confirmed exchange, double-degree and university-partnership routes can be exempt.

dMAT does not replace APS, anabin or university admission. It is an additional academic result. APS still verifies documents, and the university still makes its own admission decision.

APS Timeline: Start Before the University Portal Opens

APS India verifies academic documents issued by Indian institutions. Its certificate is generally part of the German student-visa documentation. APS does not grant admission or decide the visa.

Practical APS sequence

  1. Use the APS eligibility quiz to identify the correct procedure.
  2. Read the exact checklist for your academic background.
  3. Check dMAT applicability before finalising the file.
  4. Prepare complete academic documents, copies and translations.
  5. Register under the correct APS procedure and enter matching details.
  6. Pay through the official process.
  7. Ship the required documents and track through the APS account.
  8. Respond only through verified APS channels if clarification is requested.

APS does not publish one guaranteed processing time that every applicant can safely use. Begin early and do not build a university application around an assumed number of weeks. The processing fee is non-refundable once paid, regardless of the verification outcome.

Undergraduate, Master’s and Studienkolleg Differences

Applicant route Key early check Common timeline mistake
Bachelor’s direct entry Whether the Indian school qualification and any prior study permit direct or subject-restricted admission Assuming Class 12 alone always permits direct entry
Studienkolleg Correct course type, entrance test, language level and earlier deadline Using the general bachelor’s deadline
Master’s Exact subject-credit prerequisites and dMAT/APS classification Assuming a similar bachelor’s title proves eligibility
Restricted-admission route Whether Hochschulstart, DoSV or another additional procedure applies Completing only one of two required portals
Doctoral route Supervisor, research proposal, funding and institutional registration process Following the taught-master’s timeline

Collect first

  • Documents that require the university, board or employer to issue them.
  • Detailed syllabi needed for master’s prerequisite mapping.
  • References with an external submission step.
  • Certified copies and translations with format restrictions.

Write after programme verification

  • Motivation letter.
  • Study-plan explanation.
  • Research proposal.
  • Programme-specific CV emphasis.

Do not write one generic statement before checking the curriculum. The selected modules, methods and admission rules should control what evidence you present.

Application Costs and Cash-Flow Timing

uni-assist currently charges €75 for the first chosen course in one semester and €30 for each additional chosen course. The fee is the same for standard and VPD procedures, although some universities cover applicant fees.

Example Current uni-assist fee
One course €75
Three courses in one semester €135
Five courses in one semester €195
Reapplying in a new semester The fee structure starts again

Also budget APS, dMAT where applicable, language testing, certified copies, translations, courier, university-specific fees, visa, blocked-account setup, insurance, flight and housing deposits. Use the complete Germany cost guide before accepting an offer.

Scholarship Deadlines Run on a Different Calendar

Funding should be researched before ordinary admission deadlines. EPOS uses deadlines set by each listed postgraduate course. Erasmus Mundus applications are commonly submitted between October and January for the following academic year. University awards can open before admission, with admission, or only after enrolment.

Use the Germany scholarship guide for Indian students to separate EPOS, Deutschlandstipendium, Erasmus Mundus, university awards and foundation funding.

Do not wait for an admission offer to begin scholarship research. By the time a July admission closes, several major funding routes may already have finished selection.

Offer, Funding and Visa Sequence

  1. Receive the admission decision and read every condition.
  2. Verify the programme, campus, start date, tuition and semester contribution again.
  3. Compare all offers using total programme cost and academic fit.
  4. Accept only within the university’s stated method and deadline.
  5. Arrange the accepted financial-proof route and additional arrival cash.
  6. Prepare health-insurance evidence in the required form.
  7. Use the current German mission and Consular Services Portal instructions applicable to India.
  8. Complete enrolment, housing, registration and residence steps after arrival.

A conditional offer may require a final degree, language result, APS certificate, certified copy or tuition payment. Do not describe it as unconditional in a loan or visa file.

Common Timeline Failure Cases

Failure Why the application breaks Correct action
Using 15 July for every course The actual master’s, Studienkolleg or international deadline may be earlier Save the exact programme deadline
Starting uni-assist in the final week Missing files or payment problems cannot be corrected safely Submit at least eight weeks early where possible
Stopping after receiving a VPD The university never receives a final application Submit the VPD directly before the university deadline
Ignoring dMAT Affected APS documentation remains incomplete Check the previous-degree field and live schedule
Waiting for portals before APS Verification becomes the bottleneck Begin APS preparation earlier
Applying before checking recognition Time and fees are spent on the wrong institution or programme Verify institution, programme, campus and accreditation first
Counting an agent submission as proof You may lack portal access, receipts and accurate status Control the official account and retain every receipt
Planning funding after admission The visa, deposit or blocked-account gap becomes unmanageable Build the full funding plan during shortlisting

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Germany university application deadline for winter 2027?

Many courses use 15 July for winter entry, but it is not a universal deadline. Master’s, Studienkolleg, restricted and international programmes may close earlier. The exact programme page controls.

When should an Indian student start APS for 2027?

Start APS preparation well before the university portal opens. Check the correct procedure, document list and dMAT applicability first. APS does not provide one guaranteed processing period that should be treated as a universal promise.

Is dMAT compulsory for all Indian students?

No. The current rule applies to selected master’s applicants whose previous degree falls within listed engineering, commerce, accounting, finance, economics, business or management fields, for summer 2027 and subsequent intakes, subject to stated exemptions.

How early should I apply through uni-assist?

uni-assist recommends applying at least eight weeks before the deadline. Its live estimate dated 6 July 2026 states seven to eight weeks for credentials from Asia, although processing can take longer in individual cases.

Does a VPD complete my German university application?

No. After uni-assist issues the VPD, you must submit it with the required application directly to the university before its deadline. The VPD is currently valid for one year from issue.

How much does uni-assist cost?

The current fee is €75 for the first chosen course in one semester and €30 for each additional course. The same structure applies to standard and VPD procedures, unless the university covers the fee.
