Personal Details in Resume: What to Include (India Format)

Published 28 October 2026Resume formatting guideFor freshers and job seekers in India

Personal details in a resume are the identity and contact facts a recruiter needs to reach you: your name, phone number, email, city and professional profile links. Most other personal information is optional or unnecessary for private-sector jobs.

Quick answer: Always include full name, mobile number, professional email and city. Add LinkedIn, GitHub or a portfolio when relevant. Date of birth, gender, marital status, father’s name, religion, full address and photo are not needed for most private jobs in India; add them only when the employer, a government application or an overseas format asks. Never put Aadhaar, PAN, passport or bank numbers on a resume.

Personal details to include, keep optional and avoid

Always include

  • Full name
  • Mobile number with country code
  • Professional email
  • City and state
  • LinkedIn profile URL
  • GitHub or portfolio (for tech, design, writing)

  • Languages known
  • Nationality (for overseas roles)
  • Full postal address
  • Photo
  • Notice period or availability

Avoid on a normal resume

Each personal detail explained

Detail Include? Why
Full name Yes Use the name on your degree certificate so background checks match. Make it the largest text on the page.
Phone number Yes One number you answer during working hours, written as +91 98xxx xxxxx. Keep the voicemail or caller tune professional.
Email Yes Use a name-based address such as firstname.lastname@gmail.com. Avoid nicknames or numbers that look like birth years.
City and state Yes Recruiters filter by location and relocation. “Pune, Maharashtra” is enough; add “Open to relocation” if true.
LinkedIn Recommended Use a custom URL (linkedin.com/in/yourname) and make sure the profile matches the resume.
GitHub / portfolio For relevant roles Only link if it has real work. An empty GitHub hurts more than no link.
Date of birth Usually no Not needed for most private jobs. Government applications collect it on the form.
Gender Usually no Not relevant to your ability to do the job unless a form requires it.
Marital status No Old Indian templates include it, but it adds nothing and can invite bias.
Father’s name No Only required on some government or campus forms, not on the resume.
Languages When useful Valuable for sales, support and field roles. List each with a level: English (fluent), Hindi (fluent), Kannada (conversational).
Full address Usually no City is enough. Share the full address later in the hiring process.
Photo Usually no Not expected for most corporate roles in India. Add only for roles or forms that ask, such as some hospitality or aviation jobs.

Where personal details go on a resume

Put contact details in the header at the very top, on one or two lines under your name. Do not create a separate “Personal Details” section at the bottom unless an employer format requires one. Keep the header as plain text, not inside an image or text box, so applicant tracking systems can read it.

Personal details for government, PSU and campus applications

Government recruitment (for example SSC, banking and state PSC exams) collects date of birth, category, father’s name and address through the online application form itself. A biodata-style resume for these roles may include date of birth, gender, nationality and address, but still never ID numbers. Some campus placement cells give a fixed format; follow it exactly, including marks and personal fields it asks for.

Rule of thumb: if a form asks for it, provide it in the form. If no one asks, leave it off the resume.

Personal details when applying abroad

  • USA, Canada, UK, Australia: no photo, date of birth, gender or marital status. Name, phone, email, city and LinkedIn only.
  • Gulf countries: employers often expect nationality, visa status and sometimes a photo and date of birth.
  • Germany and parts of Europe: photos and date of birth are still common on a CV, but not mandatory.

When in doubt, follow the job post or the country’s common CV format.

Privacy and safety

Never put Aadhaar, PAN, passport, bank or card numbers on a resume. Resumes are shared widely on job portals and email, and these numbers can be misused. Share ID documents only during formal verification after an offer, through the employer’s official process.
  • Use a separate email for job applications if your personal inbox is shared.
  • Remove your full address from resumes uploaded to public job portals.
  • Check what your LinkedIn and GitHub show before linking them.
