The best skills for a fresher resume are the 8–12 skills that appear in your target job description and that you can prove through a project, internship, course or campus role.
Find the right skills for your role
Enter your target role in the free key skills generator to see the skills recruiters search for, then keep only the ones you genuinely have.
Three types of skills on a fresher resume
Technical or job skills
Tools, languages and methods specific to the role: SQL for analysts, Tally for accounts, AutoCAD for mechanical engineers. These matter most because recruiters and applicant tracking systems search for them.
Computer skills
General software every office uses: Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Google Workspace, email. List the specific features you can use, such as pivot tables, rather than just “MS Office”.
Soft skills
How you work with people and tasks: communication, teamwork, problem solving. Keep these to two to four and back them with examples elsewhere.
Languages
English, Hindi and regional languages are real skills for customer-facing, sales and support roles. Add them as one line.
How to choose skills for a fresher resume
- Collect three job descriptions for the role you want and note the skills that appear in at least two of them.
- Mark the ones you have actually used in a project, internship, course assignment or campus role.
- Keep 8–12 in total. A list of 30 skills looks padded and weakens the strong ones.
- Order by importance to the job, not by how well you know them.
- Use the job description’s wording. If it says “Microsoft Excel”, do not write only “spreadsheets”.

How to format the skills section
SKILLS Technical: Java, Spring Boot, SQL (MySQL), REST APIs, Git Web: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React (basics) Tools: VS Code, Postman, IntelliJ IDEA Soft skills: Problem solving, Teamwork, Written communication Languages: English, Hindi, Telugu
- Use category labels so a recruiter can scan in seconds.
- Use plain text, not star ratings or progress bars. Applicant tracking systems cannot read graphics, and “4 out of 5 in Java” means nothing to a recruiter.
- Place skills near the top for freshers, just below the summary or objective.
How to prove the skills you list
A skill is strongest when the same word appears again in your project or internship bullets:
Listed only
Skills: SQL, Power BI
The recruiter has no idea how well you know them.
Listed and proved
Skills: SQL, Power BI
Project: “Wrote SQL queries to clean 12 months of sales data and built a Power BI dashboard of top products by region.”
If you need help writing those bullets, see our guide to project descriptions for resume.
Resume me skill me kya likhe?
Resume ke skills section mein wahi skills likhiye jo job description mein hain aur jo aapne kisi project, internship ya course mein sach mein use ki hain. 8–12 skills kaafi hain. Technical skills pehle, phir computer skills, phir 2–4 soft skills. “Hardworking” ya “honest” jaise words skill nahi hain, inhe mat likhiye.
Skills section mistakes freshers make
- Listing every course topic. “C, C++, Java, Python, R, MATLAB, PHP” suggests you know none of them well.
- Using star ratings or bars. They waste space and are not read by applicant tracking systems.
- Personality words as skills. “Honest”, “punctual” and “hardworking” are not skills.
- One list for every job. Reorder and trim for each application.
- Skills that do not match your Naukri profile. Keep both consistent; see these Naukri key skills examples.
