Scholarships for Indian Students in UK 2027: Chevening, GREAT and More

Updated July 2026Official-source funding guideFor Indian students planning 2027

Scholarships for Indian students in the UK do not run on one calendar or one application. Chevening, Commonwealth, GREAT, Rhodes and university awards use different eligibility tests, funding levels, course rules and deadlines. First understand the wider Study in UK for Indian Students 2027 process; then build a funding strategy that does not depend on an award you have not received.

This guide separates confirmed 2027 dates from schemes whose next round is still pending. That distinction matters: a 2026 scholarship page can help you prepare, but it cannot prove that the same universities, amount or deadline will apply in 2027.

Confirmed now: Chevening 2027–28 opens on 4 August 2026 and closes on 6 October 2026. Rhodes India for 2027 closes on 23 July 2026. GREAT India and Commonwealth Master’s currently publish 2026–27 information; their 2027–28 details must be rechecked when released.

Chevening 2027–28: Exact Dates and Eligibility

Chevening is a UK government-funded scholarship for eligible one-year master’s courses. The published 2027–28 timeline is:

Stage Official date
Applications open 4 August 2026 at 11:00 UTC
Applications close 6 October 2026 at 11:00 UTC
Shortlisting Mid-February 2027
Interviews March–April 2027
Results From mid-June 2027
At least one unconditional UK offer due 8 July 2027 at 17:00 BST
Study begins September/October 2027

Core eligibility includes citizenship of a Chevening-eligible country, completion of an undergraduate degree at least two years before the application deadline, at least 2,800 hours of work experience after graduation, applications to three different eligible UK courses and a commitment to return to the home country for at least two years after the scholarship.

Chevening can count full-time work, part-time work, voluntary work and paid or unpaid internships, subject to the official rules. Do not estimate casually: reconstruct dates, weekly hours and role evidence before writing the leadership and impact sections.

Funding normally includes tuition, economy travel, arrival and departure allowances, the visa application cost, a contribution of up to £75 for TB testing, and a monthly living stipend. Exact stipend rates are reviewed, so do not publish or plan around an old monthly figure.

Chevening failure cases

  • Counting work completed before the undergraduate degree when the current rule requires post-graduation experience.
  • Choosing three course names that are not all Chevening-eligible or not meeting the course application deadlines.
  • Writing generic leadership claims without a decision, action, result and lesson.
  • Waiting for the Chevening result before applying to universities, then missing the 8 July unconditional-offer deadline.
  • Treating the scholarship as a migration route even though the award requires a two-year return-home commitment.

GREAT Scholarships India: Use the Current Round Correctly

The published India scheme for 2026–27 provides £10,000 towards tuition for eligible one-year taught postgraduate courses at participating UK universities. Applicants must be Indian passport holders and permanent residents, hold an undergraduate degree, meet the university’s English requirement and participate in GREAT scholar engagement and ambassador activities.

Applications are made through the individual university, not one central India form, and deadlines vary by institution. As of July 2026, the 2027–28 India round has not been published. Therefore:

  • Use the 2026–27 page to understand the model and likely documents.
  • Do not assume the same university list, £10,000 amount or deadline will continue.
  • Build a shortlist of participating universities only after the 2027–28 page goes live.
  • Check that the scholarship covers your exact course, not just the university.

Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships

India is on the current eligible-country list for Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships. The programme funds full-time taught master’s study for candidates from eligible low- and middle-income Commonwealth countries who could not otherwise afford UK study.

The process has two compulsory channels: submit through CSC Central and apply through an approved nominator. The CSC does not accept direct applications, and a nomination does not guarantee selection. Nominators can impose their own criteria and earlier deadlines.

Under the current published round, applicants need citizenship or recognised status in an eligible country, permanent residence there, a first degree normally at UK upper-second-class level or a lower second plus relevant postgraduate qualification, inability to afford the study without the award, full transcripts, identity evidence and at least two references in the required format.

Post-study rule: current Commonwealth Master’s conditions require scholars to return home. Switching to the Graduate Route or another visa to remain in the UK is not permitted under those conditions. This is materially different from a self-funded student’s post-study plan.

The 2026–27 round is closed and the 2027–28 timetable is not yet published. Track both the CSC page and the Indian nominating route; the nominator may close before the central system.

Rhodes Scholarship for India 2027

The Rhodes Trust states that five scholarships are available for India. For the 2027 competition, applications opened on 1 June 2026 and close at 23:59 IST on 23 July 2026. The award supports eligible postgraduate study at the University of Oxford.

Rhodes criteria and documentation are constituency-specific. Use the India information for candidates and conditions of tenure rather than a general summary from another country. The scholarship deadline also arrives much earlier than most 2027 university application deadlines, which means academic records, referees and Oxford course research must begin before the normal autumn application season.

University Scholarships: Where Most Applicants Actually Find Funding

University funding commonly appears in five forms:

Automatic merit discount

Assessed from the admission application. Confirm whether it is guaranteed or competitive and whether the offer letter shows it.

Separate competitive award

Requires essays, references or an interview. It may close before the course deadline.

Department funding

Restricted to a faculty, research topic or programme. The central scholarship page may not list every award.

Research studentship

Usually tied to a project, supervisor and research-degree conditions. Fee status and stipend eligibility can differ.

Alumni or partner award

Available only through a named institution, employer, government or previous university relationship.

Before applying, verify the institution and awarding body with the UK university recognition and sponsor checks. A scholarship does not repair an unrecognised degree, a wrong campus or a course that does not meet your professional objective.

A Scholarship Strategy That Does Not Depend on Luck

  1. Set the unfunded ceiling. Calculate the full amount your family or loan can support using the UK cost guide.
  2. Build three lists. Full awards, substantial partial awards and affordable universities even with no scholarship.
  3. Map eligibility before essays. Nationality, residence, degree date, work hours, course type, return-home rule and offer requirement.
  4. Apply to courses early. Scholarships that require an unconditional offer can become impossible if admission documents arrive late.
  5. Use evidence once, adapt the argument. Maintain a master record of projects, leadership, impact, employment and awards, but write each scholarship against its actual criteria.
  6. Do not subtract funding until confirmed in writing. Your visa and deposit plan must work if every competitive scholarship fails.

Prepare a Clean Academic and Experience Record

Scholarship forms repeatedly ask for education, work, projects, leadership and measurable outcomes. Build a factual master CV, then adapt the evidence to each award instead of inventing a new history each time.

Scholarship Red Flags and Failure Cases

Red flag Why it fails What to do
“Guaranteed scholarship after deposit” Competitive awards are not guaranteed, and deposits can be non-refundable. Demand the award name, terms and written decision before paying.
Old award page used for 2027 Amount, institution list and deadline may change. Check the award year in the page heading and terms.
University eligible, course ineligible Many schemes restrict level, subject or one-year duration. Match the exact course code and intake.
One generic essay for every award Selection criteria differ: leadership, development impact, academic excellence or subject fit. Build evidence modules, then answer the named criterion.
Scholarship replaces proof of funds automatically Only official sponsorship evidence in the accepted form can replace the relevant financial evidence. Check the visa evidence rules and scholarship letter wording.
Return-home condition ignored Some awards expressly prevent a Graduate Route plan. Read tenure and immigration conditions before accepting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which UK scholarship is fully funded for Indian students?

Chevening is a fully funded UK government scholarship for eligible one-year master’s courses. Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships can also provide full funding for eligible Indian candidates, but use a nominating route and require scholars to return home after the award.

When does Chevening open for 2027–28?

Chevening applications open on 4 August 2026 at 11:00 UTC and close on 6 October 2026 at 11:00 UTC. Successful candidates must submit at least one unconditional UK university offer by 8 July 2027 at 17:00 BST.

How much is the GREAT Scholarship for Indian students?

The published 2026–27 India scheme provides £10,000 towards tuition for eligible one-year taught postgraduate courses. As of July 2026, the 2027–28 India round has not yet been published, so applicants should treat £10,000 as the current scheme reference, not a confirmed 2027 award.

Can I apply for a scholarship before receiving a UK university offer?

It depends. Chevening lets applicants begin before holding an offer but requires applications to three eligible courses and at least one unconditional offer by its later deadline. University awards and GREAT Scholarships usually require a course application first. Always follow the scholarship’s own sequence.

Is a scholarship shown on a university website automatically available for my course?

No. Awards can be restricted by nationality, level, department, course, campus, fee status or intake. Check the scholarship terms and the exact course page, then obtain a written decision before deducting it from your budget.

Can a Commonwealth scholar stay in the UK on the Graduate Route?

The current Commonwealth Master’s conditions state that scholars commit to returning home and may not switch to a Graduate or other visa to remain in the UK after the scholarship. Applicants should read the conditions for their own award year.
